PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Toronto
Canadian Fine Art, Waddingtons, Toronto, November 19, 2018, lot 82
Private Collection, Ontario

The languid forms and cropped framing of this oil sketch are classically Arthur Lismer. Although not directly stated, based on the known provenance and the work having been once framed at Toronto’s Isacc’s Gallery, the subject matter is quite likely in Ontario. This is further implied by a handling of light and palette which is very comparable to works such as Georgian Bay, 1950, and The Rock Pool, Georgian Bay, 1947, sold by Heffel in June and October of 2022 respectively. While the vast majority of landscape painters, his Group of Seven contemporaries included, would face themselves outwards to take in the whichever vista or expanse that stood before them, Lismer often gravitated more idiosyncratic, enclosed compositions such as this one. He employed this personal and stylistic preference on the shores of Georgian Bay, the coast the Atlantic, the rainforests of BC, and in many other locales over his long and celebrated career.
