[ translate ]

Arthur Secunda (American, 1927–2022) was an internationally recognized painter, printmaker, sculptor, collagist, and educator whose career extended across more than seven decades. Following service as a staff artist in the United States Air Force, Secunda studied at New York University and the Art Students League before continuing his training in Paris, Rome, and Mexico. He became known for his inventive approach to lithography and other printmaking processes, producing works that range from expressive figuration to bold abstraction and stylized landscape imagery. Secunda collaborated with major American print workshops, including Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Gemini Ltd., and his works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and National Gallery of Australia.

Confrontation, 1970, color lithograph from aluminum in two blended oranges and gray on calendered Rives BFK paper. Against a luminous orange field that shifts in intensity across the sheet, two opposing groups of pale gray, repeated figures advance toward one another from either side. Printed by David Trowbridge and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite at lower left “Confrontation, Tamarind impression” and signed “Arthur Secunda” at lower right, with the Tamarind and Trowbridge blindstamps. The verso is inscribed “2859” and “calendered Rives BFK.” “Tamarind impression” identifies this example as an impression retained by the workshop outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 32.25 x 19 inches. The sheet shows light overall toning and three remnants of old mounting tape along the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
