Arthur Stone (1847-1938) sterling silver monumental yachting trophy

urn form. From the Eastern Yacht Club Cruise, 1913. Prize for the first-class schooner, won by Elena, which was owned by Morton Plant: a railroad baron, philanthropist, and avid yachtsman. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club and became known as Commodore Plant, and commissioned Nathaniel Herreshoff to build a yacht that "could win": the 136 ft Elena. Plant was also known for a famous trade with Pierre Cartier where Plant traded his Fifth Avenue home in New York city to Cartier for a double strand of pearls. At the time, they were both valued at 1 million dollars. Plant gave them as a gift to his young wife, Maisie. The trophy is in a classical design with a wave and shell rim, flared body with a galleon at sea. Wreath designs, base has fish tail supports and a shell and wave design. Gold wash interior. 11 1/2" high, 12 1/2" diameter. 91.94 ozt. Made in Arthur Stone workshop by holloware specialist Herbert A. Taylor. Marked on bottom.
