No where can this be seen as clearly as on the blocks themselves. David Acton, in his book titled Hand of a Craftsman: The Woodcut Technique of Gustave Baumann recalls “Baumann’s wood blocks were the product of such care and diligence that they incited their own interest. Occasionally they were included in his solo exhibitions and even appeared in some of the era’s landmark shows of color woodblocks.” The wood block presented here, carved ca. 1924, was used to produce the woodcut Aspen – Red River.
