Extrait des Procès-Verbaux de L'Assemblée Nationale, Des 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26 Août & premier Octobre 1789. Déclaration des Droits de L'Homme en Société. With 1 vignette in wood engraving.
[Versailles, F.-J. Baudouin, Imprimeur de l’Assemblée Nationale, 1789]. 8° (19,8 × 12,5 cm). 8 pages. - BOUND WITH: Extrait des Procès-Verbaux de l’Assemblée Nationale, Des 9, 11, 12, 14, 17, 21, 24, 27, 30 Septembre et 1 Octobre 1789. Articles de Constitution. With vignette in wood engraving. [Ibidem]. 6 pages, [1] leaf. - 2 parts in 1 volume. Modern half-morocco binding with gilt title to spine.

I. Not in Monglond. - The first printed edition of the Declaration of Human Rights by the French National Assembly, the copy held by the French National Library, has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register since 2003. - Adopted on 26 August 1789, the text sets out in 17 articles the rights inalienably granted to every French citizen as a human being and as a citizen of France. It can thus be regarded as arguably the most significant long-term outcome of the French Revolution, having, not least, formed the basis for the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948). -
II. First edition of the French Constitution, a milestone in the development of democracy as a form of government. At the end is King Louis XVI’s official reply, entitled "Réponse du Roi. 5 Octobre au soir. J’accepte purement et simplement les Articles de Constitution et la Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme, que l’Assemblée Nationale m’a presentés. Signé, Louis.” - Both of these prints, presented here together, are extremely rare; only a few copies are held by public institutions. - The "Déclaration" is slightly browned, with the first and last pages more heavily affected; the ‘Constitution’ is in fresh condition apart from a few brown spots.
