Sale, Phillips, London, 14 December 1999, lot 240
This interior scene derives from a popular composition by David Teniers the Younger showing a doctor treating a patient's foot. Such depictions of medical practitioners, often imbued with humour and alluding to contemporary attitudes towards quackery, were among the most successful genre subjects in seventeenth century Flemish art. The present work is closely related to the version now in the National Gallery, London (NG2599), one of several surviving variants believed to reproduce a now-lost original by Teniers.
