One of several known variants of a successful composition, the present work is by an as yet unidentified flower painter active in the circle of Frans Francken II (1581-1642). The artist draws on motifs established by Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) and Osias Beert the Elder (c. 1580-1623/24), while displaying affinities with the work of Andries Daniels (c. 1580-1640). Closely related versions, with minor variations in the arrangement of the flowers and accompanying elements, are known in the Musée Sarret de Grozon, Arbois, and have also passed through D'Orsay, Paris (March 1980) and Galerie Lowet de Wotrenge, Antwerp.
We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for suggesting the attribution, on the basis of a colour photograph, and for his assistance in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
