The present composition was clearly very popular, as there were numerous versions of its type, such as one by Jan Brueghel II and Hendrick van Balen previously in the collection of Spencer Churchill, and with Leonard Koetser by 1967 (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, p. 207, fig. 250). The present lot comes closest to the work offered at the Dorotheum, Vienna, 13 April 2011, lot 406, identified by Dr Klaus Ertz as being by Jan Brueghel II.
