The present picture was offered at Koller in 2005 (21 September, lot 3033) as a work by Jan Brueghel the Elder, an attribution that was endorsed by Klaus Ertz. Ertz subsequently included the painting in his catalogue raisonné (see Literature), dating it to circa 1600. More recent scholarship, however, has reclassified the work as a production of the artist's studio (see Jan Brueghel the Elder Complete Catalogue Online).
In his discussion of the present painting, Ertz compares it with a group of landscapes dating to 1600, noting similarities with Landscape with Saint Jerome (Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv. no. 5161) and Forest Landscape with Castle (Museo del Prado, Madrid, inv. no. 1385). The composition is anchored by the vertical accent of a tree in the foreground, while the meticulous observation of nature combines to create a highly detailed, naturalistic atmosphere typical of Brueghel's workshop output around the turn of the 17th Century.
