LOT 2062

Attractive Open Mouth French Bisque Doll.

[ translate ]

This 26" (66cm) bisque socket head doll is incised simply "11", however, she is undoubtedly of Jumeau manufacture, perhaps at the very start of the SFBJ period. She has an open mouth with six almost square upper teeth, finely painted eyelashes, thick heavy brows, and blue glass eyes which are attached to a lead counter weight inside the head so that when leaned forward or backwards the eyes close. She is on her original fully jointed French wood and composition body with mostly original finish and perhaps some old touch-up to the hands. The costume consists of a dark blue pleated silk high waist dress with lace collar and sleeve trim, and one can see by the material which is obscured by the folds that it was once a brighter color, but has faded somewhat with time. The shoes are old, although not marked, and consisting of dark brown and light brown leather. The wig is dark brown human hair, perhaps a homemade, which is often the case in this period as people wanted to have their child's doll have a wig made of the child's hair. The fancy lace, straw, and floral bonnet is well coordinated with the style and material of the dress. Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: 25 - 1/2" x 10" x 6".
