[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful cast bronze handle from a chest or situla, with a woman's face in high relief at its lower end, a standing, nude cherub in high relief at the upper end, and two relief doves in flight on the body of the handle itself. The cherub figure may represent the god Cupid (Eros), who in Roman times switched from being represented as a handsome young man to being the chubby baby we are familiar with today. The bronze on this example is in particularly nice condition, smooth and with an even, grey-green patina. Size: 1.8" W x 3.45" H (4.6 cm x 8.8 cm); 5.05" H (12.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
