Attributed to Pieter van Bloemen, known as Standaart (Antwerp, 17 January 1657 - Antwerp, 1720) , oil painting on canvas depicting a battle scene, 84 x 119 cm. With frame, 110 x 143 cm. Pieter van Bloemen belongs to a family of Flemish painters and drawers active between Italy and France. In 1673 he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, and ten years later he was in Lyon with the Dutch artists Adriaen van der Cabel and Gillis Weenix. Since 1686 he lived in Rome, where he joined the “Schildersbent”, an association of mainly Dutch and Flemish painters, where Pieter acquired the nickname of Standaart or “Banner”, probably as a result of the representation of banners which he used to paint in battle scenes.
