Biography: Paul Gavarni (1804–1866), born in Paris as Guillaume Chevalier, was a leading French lithographer known for his witty and insightful satirical prints depicting 19th-century urban life. He produced over 4,000 works for journals such as Le Charivari, helping elevate social lithography alongside artists like Honoré Daumier. Trained in mechanical drawing, he developed his artistic voice through observation of both rural and Parisian life. Gavarni moved in prominent literary and artistic circles, counting figures like Balzac and Dickens among his friends, and enjoyed great popularity in his early career. Later works became darker and more reflective, focusing on themes of poverty and disillusionment. Though his output declined toward the end of his life, he remains an important figure in the development of modern printmaking.
Condition: Overall in fair antique condition, the sheet shows moderate age-related wear including toning and discoloration throughout, with visible creasing and a more pronounced diagonal crease with minor paper separation/lifting at the lower area. There are scattered surface abrasions, light staining, and small losses along the edges, as well as handling wear consistent with age. Some minor cracking and flaking to the paper surface is present, particularly in stressed areas. The image itself remains legible with stable color, though there is slight fading and minor pigment loss in places. The work is mounted, and the mount shows additional toning and edge wear.
