One of Huang Shan Shou's (1855-1919) Most Creative and Refined Paintings. The delicacy of the lines, colors and subject matter are perfectly suited to the small size. Over 300 of works attributed to him have been offered for sale. Unfortunately at least 250 were very poor fakes and most of the remainder, if real were rather boring and repetitive. These “attributed pieces” sold in the $300 to $3,000 range. Two legitimate larger pieces, that had some condition issues, sold for $1,600 and $35,000. His highest recorded sale price at auction is approx. $150,000 USD.

From the James Darling Family of Williamsburg and Hampton Virginia. The Darling family home was built in 1905. This painting is from the Asian collection of James Darling and wife, both of whom passed away in their 90’s within 13 days of each other. James, a Yale graduate, well known as a music authority, Mr. Darling valued authenticity, academic rigor and a clear sense of purpose to touch the consciousness of the listener/ viewer.
