Lucy of Leinster
Watercolor and gouache, oval
17.5 x 12.5 cm
A monogram “A. G.” is inscribed on the tree in the center on the right.
The subject of our miniature is taken from a 1725 poem, *Colin and Lucy*, written by Thomas
Thirckell, a minor English poet. This text, which tells the tragic love story of Lucy, with
elements of the supernatural, enjoyed great success in the late 18th century and during the
first half of the 19th century.
Our miniature is likely a reproduction of the illustration engraved in 1788 by William Ward.
