Property of the descendants of William & Robert Adam
Attributed to Andrew Geddes A.R.A.
Edinburgh 1783 - 1844 London
Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Elizabeth Fox, Baroness Holland (1771-1845), three-quarter-length, seated wearing a light brown dress

oil on canvas
unframed: 58.4 x 48.1 cm.; 23 x 19 in.
framed: 80.2 x 70.1 cm.; 31 1/2 x 27 5/8 in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a vertical scratch, with losses, in the red curtain, upper left, and in raking light it is possible to discern an area of varnish that has been removed around this, as well as small spots of retouching scattered through the rest of the background. A more distinct network of craquelure has formed in the more thickly painted parts of the sitter's dress, and there are fine lines of visible retouching here. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all this, and further reveals some retouching in the sitter's hands and wrists, in an around her collar, and to the dark back of the chair, left (just by the dog's head). There are also further areas of retouching around the upper corners and upper margin. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.

Provenance:
Possibly commissioned Elizabeth Vassall Fox, Baroness Holland (1771–1845);
Her son General Charles Richard Fox (1796–1873);
Thence by descent.
