Attributed to Anthony Claesz. the Younger,
Dutch 1616-1652-
Study of a tulip;
watercolour on laid paper, 26.6 x 10.4 cm., (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Claesz's preoccupation with tulips echoes the wave of tulipmania in the Netherlands in the mid-1600s, which caused soaring prices for the bulbs, and in turn one of the most significant market crashes in history. The present study depicts one of the rarer and, therefore, more valuable varieties of tulip, with its variegated, highly striped petals which were especially sought after.
