Attributed to Catharina van Hemessen (1528 – after 1565), 24,7 x 31,8 cm
Attributed to Catharina van Hemessen (1528 – after 1565), 24,7 x 31,8 cm
No visible signature (attributed to van Hemessen C.), the portrait of a young lady with her dog, the back of the panel with an indistinctly written inscription, 16th/17thC, oil on an oak panel, 24,7 x 31,8 cm
Condition: - the back of the panel impregnated with wax
- the background, in our opinion, is completely overpainted with black paint. Underneath, remains of a green background are still visible in the craquelé to the left bottom corner, the typical green colour Catharina van Hemessen often uses in her portraits.
- the face: retouches to the right and left cheek, the right eyebrow, the right ear, some touches to the nose and forehead
- the back of the right hand overpainted
- the dog with retouches to the face (between the eyes)
- the bottom edge overpainted
- the bottom edge with some wear to the varnish/paint
- the work needs in our opinion a check-up and revision of some old overpainted areas (especially the background).
