Attributed to Franz Kaisermann, Swiss 1765-1833- Falls of Tivoli; pencil and watercolour on paper, 67 x 104 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present watercolour, typical of Kaisermann's style, displays a picturesque scene of the Tivoli waterfalls, located approximately eighteen miles north-east of Rome. Kaisermann moved to Rome in 1789 to work as an assistant to Abraham-Louis-Rodolphe Ducros. This relationship soon ended and Kaisermann went on to work for Pauline Bonaparte and her husband Prince Camillo Borghese. During this period he produced a number of his Roman-inspired views, many to the commercial taste of the English and German travellers of the Grand Tour. The artist returned to the subject of Tivoli many times over his career, and it was clearly close to his heart. See, for example, his watercolours at Christie’s, New York, 28 January 2000, lot 77, and at Sotheby’s, London, 9 March 2007, lot 1057, both of which hold similarities to the present work. For further close comparison, although of a different subject, see the artist’s watercolour of the Grand Waterfalls of Ternini, of similar sized sheet, and housed in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC [no.2011.54.1]. The hand-coloured black border surrounding the present work is typical of the artist’s method. The treatment of the figures, foliage, water, and architecture, too, are entirely consistent with his style.
Held in a wooden gilded composition frame with some losses. The paper has browned slightly. Some slight fading of colours. Scattered spots of foxing. Some damp staining along the top and bottom edges and in the central foliage. A few small damages in the sky. A small horizontal crease on the right edge just under halfway down. Marks. Minor losses. Surface dirt. Some minor flaking of paint particularly in the dark tree foliage upper right. The details are well preserved and the modelling of the composition retains its delicacy.
