Attributed to George Desmarées (Swedish/German, 1697-1776)

Portrait of Clement August of Bavaria, circa 1770
oil on canvas
36 7/8 x 28 3/8 inches.

Fine Art
Frame: 49 1/8 x 41 5/8 inches. Canvas has been re-lined. Having a layer of dust to the surface of the canvas. In overall good, stable and attractive condition. Upon examination under natural light, the image has minute instances of flaking loss to paint in the image's face, hands, body and to the table and paper. This layer of paint is no longer unstable, as it is under a rather heavy layer of varnish. Examination under UV light shows scattered instances of retouch to spots on the sitter's face, spots in his garment, and to his hands. There appear to also be some large swaths of retouch in the background. Additional images available upon request.

Provenance:
The Detroit Institute of Arts;
acquired directly from the above, prior to 1995

Note:
The missive held by the subject reads: À Son altesse Sér.me. Électorale/ Monseigneur Le Duc Clément/ August de Bavière, Électeur/ du Cologne/ à Bonn.
