Saint Rosalia was a 12th-century hermit who lived in a cave near Palermo. During a plague that struck the city in 1624, her relics were carried through the streets, after which the plague ceased. The Flemish artist Anthony Van Dyck, who was living in Palermo at that time, painted several compositions honoring her, including three showing her apotheosis, which are closely related to this drawing. Owing to her intervention, since 1624 Saint Rosalia is venerated as the patroness of Palermo and a protectress against disease. Today in Sicily she is invoked for protection against Covid-19.
