Born in Paris in 1733, Hubert Robert initially trained under the sculptor René-Michel Slodtz (1705–1764), contrary to his parents' wish that he pursue a clerical career. After being admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, he later spent time in Rome, where he developed his passion for classical Italian monuments, as also demonstrated by the painting offered here, which probably depicts St Peter's Basilica in Rome. He recorded these buildings in drawings so that he could later reuse the motifs in various compositions. Robert derived a large part of his pictorial vocabulary from these studies made during his stay in Italy.
Oil on panel. Paint surface well preserved, in places with impasto paint application and fine vertical craquelure. Minimal colour abrasion along the margins.
Under UV light isolated areas of retouching visible in the foreground, as well as further small areas of retouching in the sky. Varnish fluoresces unevenly greenish.
