(Dutch, 1647-1721)Still Life of Spring Flowers in a Gilt Bronze Urn on a Ledge, unsigned, oil on canvas, 27-7/8 x 35-5/8 in.; gilt wood frame, 34-1/4 x 41-1/2 in.Note:ÿAccording to expert, Fred G. Meijer, this painting, "is reminiscent of the work of Jakob Bogdÿny, a Hungarian artist working in England, but the palette differs. There is, however, a signed flower painting by Jan van der Vaart, who was born in Haarlem, but worked in London and who was mainly a portraitist, and appears to have worked together with Bogdÿny." A similar signed flower painting by van der Vaart was advertised in a 1949 edition of The Connoisseur by G. M. Lotinga, Ltd., London (facsimile accompanies lot). Meijer goes on to state that, "in fact some of the flowers are almost identical, as well as the structure in the right background."Brunk Auctions would like to thank Dr. Meijer for his assistance with this painting. Provenance: Private New England Collection
Condition Report: lined, lacking tacking edges, craquelure, crackle, scattered light retouch
