Attributed to John Inigo Richards RA (1731-1810)
A View of a Garden Pavilion
Oil on canvas, 40cm by 52cm

Provenance: Anon. Sale; Sotheby's, London, 24th Nov 2005, lot 77 (as 'Attr. Samuel Wale, RA'); Private Collection, UK

Richards was a founding member of the Royal Academy where, from 1769 to 1809, he exhibited capricci and topographical views. He was frequently employed to record the grounds of country houses. Like his contemporary Francis Hayman, Richards achieved success as a scene painter at Covent Garden, and from 1777 to 1803 he was the theatre's Principal Painter. In 1788, Richards was elected Secretary of the Royal Academy, a post he held until his death.

. In sensitively restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. Relatively delicate and sporadic retouching throughout the sky with a couple of more concentrated patches within and around the foliage of the trees and also above the gate on the left hand side within the building. The back of the pavilion and area in shadow have also had rather more consistent treatment and strengthening. The two upright trees on the far right hand side have also had reasonable retouching to emphasise more individual foliage. The green of the foreground has had a synthetic amount of retouching throughout which is slightly more concentrated towards the lower right hand corner and around the figure carrying the ladder. Areas of stable craquelure. Some light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Otherwise in a good state of preservation. For more information please contact department.
