Attributed to Paul Brou, a Continental sculpted white marble Bacchanal

Attributed to Paul Brou (Dutch, fl. 19th century), a Continental sculpted white marble group, Bacchanal of infant satyrs, late 19th century, the central figure of the infant Silenus on a donkey surrounded by further cavorting putti holding cups, grapes and thyrsi, the moulded socle inscribed PAUL BROU 51cm high, 113cm wideA group of the same subject and dimensions by Brou was offered at Sotheby's London, 20 March, 1992, lot 133Condition Report: Minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, and it is a little greyish in colour from dust or dirt.The marble is a little weathered especially to tops of heads, resulting in loss of definition in areas.There is a handful of areas of filling/restoration, including to the wrist of the putto with the cymbals and the upper arm of the putto raising the thyrsus, and one of the standing putti's feet. Two or three sections of the plith have been filled, possibly where previously damaged or as a result of irregularities in the marble. Small losses and nibbling to the plinth.There is a handful of minor chips, including to one of the putti's chalices and to one of the panther's ears. Condition Report Disclaimer
