A man-o'-war saluting, with other vessels off the coast, a castle on an outcrop to the right
Oil on millboard
71 x 132cm (27¾ x 51¾ in.)
Condition Report:
Relined. Reline visible to the upper edge along with some rubbing to the framing edge. Thick covering varnish throughout causing some discoloration. Craquelure with visible infilling in natural light throughout. Two vertical lines running the height of the canvas, one approx. 40cm from the left edge, the other 20cm from the right edge. Possibly as a result of the joining of the canvas, but this is not clear. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching and infilling. There is a thick green masking varnish which may be distorting the extent of retouching.
