Attributed to Sigismund Freudenberger (Swiss, 1745-1801) Seated Mother with Baby and Small Child in a Walled Garden
Attributed to Sigismund Freudenberger (Swiss, 1745-1801)
Seated Mother with Baby and Small Child in a Walled Garden. Unsigned, attributed to "Freudenberger" on a detached label affixed to the frame backing paper. Ink and wash on paper, 5 7/8 x 4 7/8 in., framed. Condition: Stain to u.r. quadrant, scattered pale fox marks, not examined out of frame.
N.B. While ostensibly a genre scene, the poses of the figures are reminiscent of a Madonna and Child with St. John. In the work at hand, the standing child holds a small animal, perhaps a cat, while the baby stretches from the mother's lap, reaching out to touch the creature.
