Selected images of Malcolm McDowell on the set of "A Clockwork Orange" , 1971
10 gelatin silver prints. (10)
each approximately 21.6 x 34.9cm (8 1/2 x 13 3/4in)
sheet each approximately 27.9 x 35.6cm (11 x 14in)

Adapted from Anthony Burgess's dystopian crime thriller and released in 1971, Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange remains one of the most acclaimed yet controversial films in the history of the medium. The film's central character Alex (played by Malcolm McDowell) is the leader of a sexually violent and murderous gang on an increasing crime spree. After being caught, Alex is forced into a horrifying rehabilitation.

Clockwork Orange came after Kubrick's first masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, and is central to his idea of what a film could accomplish at its finest. In an interview with the New York Times in 1972, Kubrick commented that "he was excited by everything about it, the plot, the ideas, the characters and, of course, the language. Added to which, the story was of manageable size in terms of adapting it for films and the fact that the story functions on several levels, political, sociological, philosophical and on a kind of dreamlike psychological-symbolic level."
