Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928–2019) was a New York printmaker known for lithographs, etchings, and engravings ranging from expressive figure studies to animal subjects. His prints often use close cropping, strong tonal contrasts, and heavily worked surfaces to give their subjects a distinct psychological presence. Schwartz’s work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and Brooklyn Museum.

Pig, from A Bestiary, 1962, is a lithograph printed in black and gray on ivory wove paper. Printed by Joe Funk and published by Kanthos Press, the work belongs to Schwartz’s portfolio of animal studies accompanying poems by Anthony Hecht. The composition shows a large pig lying in profile with its eyes closed, its pale body outlined by heavy black strokes while the head and underside are more densely worked. Signed and numbered in graphite “Aubrey Schwartz 18/100” lower right, with two blindstamps along the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 18 x 15.125 inches. Overall good appearance. Light toning with minor handling and edge wear. Remnants of mounting tape appear along the upper edge verso, with the pencil notation “SS-11” at upper left. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
