Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928-2019), A Bestiary, 1962 Portfolio Title and Colophon Leaves

[ translate ]

Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928–2019) was a New York printmaker known for lithographs, etchings, and engravings ranging from expressive figure studies to animal subjects. His prints often use close cropping, strong tonal contrasts, and heavily worked surfaces to give their subjects a distinct psychological presence. Schwartz’s work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and Brooklyn Museum.

A Bestiary, 1962, comprises the loose title and colophon leaves from the portfolio of lithographs by Aubrey Schwartz with poetry by Anthony Hecht, published by the Kanthos Press, Los Angeles. The title sheet reads “A Bestiary / Lithographs by Aubrey Schwartz / Poetry by Anthony Hecht,” while the colophon states that the original portfolio contained twenty stone lithographs and six poems. The lithographs were printed by Joe Funk, with letterpress by the Plantin Press and bindings by the Schuberth Bookbindery. The colophon is numbered 18 from the edition of 100. No lithographs, poems, binding, or portfolio case are included; this lot consists only of the photographed title and colophon leaves. Both sheets measure approximately 18 x 15 inches. The sheets show light handling and minor age-related wear along the deckled edges. Overall present well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
