Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928-2019), Armadillo, from A Bestiary, 1962 Lithograph
Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928–2019) was a New York printmaker known for lithographs, etchings, and engravings ranging from expressive figure studies to animal subjects. His prints often use close cropping, strong tonal contrasts, and heavily worked surfaces to give their subjects a distinct psychological presence. Schwartz’s work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and Brooklyn Museum.
Armadillo, from A Bestiary, 1962, is a lithograph printed in black on cream Arches wove paper by Joe Funk and published by Kanthos Press, Los Angeles. It belongs to Schwartz’s portfolio of twenty lithographs issued with poetry by Anthony Hecht. The image presents a crouching armadillo in profile, its pale segmented shell rising above the dark body, sharply pointed head, hooked claws, and long tapering tail. Fine linear marks describe the plates of the shell and coarse hair of the legs and underside, while the surrounding paper is left largely open. Signed in graphite “Aubrey Schwartz” and numbered “18/100” lower right, with the Kanthos Press and Joe Funk blindstamps along the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 18 x 15 inches. Overall good appearance. Light toning with minor handling along the deckled sheet edges. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
