Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928-2019), Horned Lizard, from A Bestiary, 1962 Lithograph
Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928–2019) was a New York printmaker known for lithographs, etchings, and engravings ranging from expressive figure studies to animal subjects. His prints often use close cropping, strong tonal contrasts, and heavily worked surfaces to give their subjects a distinct psychological presence. Schwartz’s work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and Brooklyn Museum.
Horned Lizard, from A Bestiary, 1962, is a lithograph printed in black on cream Arches wove paper by Joe Funk and published by Kanthos Press, Los Angeles. It belongs to Schwartz’s twenty-lithograph A Bestiary portfolio, issued with poetry by Anthony Hecht. The image shows a horned lizard stretched across a narrow band of ground against a nearly solid black field. Its pale body, circular eye, open mouth, and pointed horns are picked out with fine, scratchy marks that describe the scales and folds of its skin. Numbered in graphite “18/100” lower left and signed “Aubrey Schwartz” lower right, with the Kanthos Press and Joe Funk blindstamps along the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 15 x 18 inches. Overall good appearance. Light age toning and minor handling along the deckled sheet edges, with two old hinge remnants at the upper verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
