Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928-2019), Rhinoceros, from A Bestiary, 1962 Lithograph
Aubrey Schwartz (American, 1928–2019) was a New York printmaker known for lithographs, etchings, and engravings ranging from expressive figure studies to animal subjects. His prints often use close cropping, strong tonal contrasts, and heavily worked surfaces to give their subjects a distinct psychological presence. Schwartz’s work is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, and Brooklyn Museum.
Rhinoceros, 1962, is a lithograph in black ink on cream Arches paper from Schwartz’s portfolio A Bestiary, published by Kanthos Press, Los Angeles. The complete portfolio comprises twenty lithographs accompanied by poetry by Anthony Hecht, a title page and six text leaves. The rhinoceros is shown in left-facing profile, its horn, eye and heavy folds of skin picked out against a nearly solid black field that extends close to the deckled sheet edges. Signed in pencil “Aubrey Schwartz” and numbered “18/100” lower right, with a circular Joe Funk blindstamp immediately to the left. Sheet measures approximately 18 × 15? inches. Light overall toning and minor handling or surface wear, with small hinge or tape remnants along the upper verso; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
