Aubrey Williams, British/Guyanese 1926-1990 - Sun Stone, 1968; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Aubrey' and signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Aubrey Williams 68 Sun Stone' , 75 x 148.5 cm (unframed) (ARR) Note: Aubrey Williams, combines abstract impressionist tendencies with the forms and symbols of the pre-Colombian art of the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas. This piece is therefore typical of Williams’s style, with his bold handling of the paint producing abstract forms which convey a sense of energy and urgency. The influence of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, whom Williams himself credited with shaping his artistic style, can clearly be seen in this piece. He moved to London in the 1950s and quickly became one of the leading members of the avant-garde movement there, especially through his connection with the artist Denis Bowen. Williams co-founded the Caribbean Artists’ Movement with other London-based Caribbean artists and intellectuals. His artwork is currently in the collection of the Tate in London, the Arts Council, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, and the Bristol Museum and Gallery, among others.
