Audubon Aquatint, Blue Eyed Yellow Warbler or
AUDUBON, John James (1785 - 1851).
Blue Eyed Yellow Warbler or Yellow-Poll Warbler, Plate 95
Aquatint engraving with original hand color.
London: Robert Havell, 1827-1838.
38 5/8" x 25 1/2" sheet.
Comparable: Christie's, 6/25/2004 - $2,868; Christie's, 1/18/2001 - $2,585
The males chase each other with great courage, and fight for a few moments, to establish their claim to any particular spot or tree, after which they are seen climbing up and down among the twigs and smaller branches, looking keenly among the leaves and blossoms for insects. Careless of the presence of man, the Blue-eyed Warbler is easily approached. The same carelessness makes it build its little nest almost always within reach of the latter. The parents are very assiduous in the discharge of their duties.
