Audubon Aquatint, Greenshank
AUDUBON, John James (1785 - 1851).
Greenshank, Plate 269.
Aquatint engraving with original hand color.
London: Robert Havell, 1827-1838.
25 1/4” x 38 1/4” sheet, 32” x 39 1/2” framed.
Comparable: Guernsey's, 2013 - $10,000; Christie's, 2004 - $8,365.
Although in summer these birds may be seen in many parts of the islands, they are yet very rare, a pair being to be met with only at an interval of several miles. In other parts of Scotland they are seen chiefly in autumn, but are of rare occurrence. It is curious how nearly by this account the habits of the Greenshank correspond with those of the Tell-tale Godwit, Totanus vociferus.
