cf. Gunther Sander, August Sander. Menschen ohne Maske. Photographien 1906 - 1952, Munich 1976, ill. 80; cf. Gunther Sander (ed.), August Sander. Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Portraitphotographien 1892 - 1952, Munich 1997, plate 273 (here titled: Dorfschulleiter, Westerwald); cf. Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Köln (ed.): August Sander. Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts, Vol. 4: Die Stände, Munich 2002, ill. p. 209

The present print was a gift from the village schoolteacher Otto Altgeld, portrayed by Sander in the Westerwald in 1921, to the current owner. Trained as a photographer himself, the latter also portrayed the pedagogue in autumn 1972 and received the photograph in return. Our image is a variant of the renowned, widely published shot of the village teacher, in which he can be seen in a similar pose accompanied by his dog.

Supplement: Heinz Straeter, Otto Altgeld, former teacher, Volkertzen (Westerwald), from the series: Hommage à Sander, 1972. Gelatin silver print
