Augustin Mottin de La Balme (1736–1780) , French cavalry captain, instructor at the Lunéville riding school and writer on cavalry tactics, had left France to support the American Revolution against his orders by disguising himself as doctor.
On July 8, 1777, Congress appointed La Balme colonel and inspector general of the United States Cavalry, but he did not gain Washington's support for the position and retired in early 1778.
The following year he campaigned as a volunteer on the Penobscot. and elsewhere, and subsequently among the former French colonies in the West; in November 1780, he and his men were massacred near Miami, Ohio, by a group of Little Turtle Indians.
