Catalog Note:
Augustus B. Higginson was born in 1866 at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Upon completing his training in architecture at Harvard University and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Higginson began his own practice in Chicago by 1886. Nine years later in 1905, he moved and settled in Montecito, California. Higginson partnered with a fellow architect Edward Russel Ray and operated their firm 'Higginson and Ray, Architects' from 1908 to 1909. Before and after this period, Higginson appears to have operated his own architectural firm. The Coe House, commissioned by Schuyler Montgomery Coe (1851-1922) and Emma James Coe (1852-1910), was apparently sold shortly after it was built, when Emma Coe passed away. According to the 1920 Census, Schuyler Coe was remarried to Alice Harding Ripley and the couple was living in Riverside, Illinois. The Coe House is still in existence to this date — though some parts of the house have undergone renovations.
Condition Report: Unframed.
Paper toned. Some thinning of paper, mainly upper left quadrant. Light surface dirt. Localized stains and light foxing. Good condition.
