BROWSE CATALOG (copy link) : https: //www. sfogliami. it/fl/241189/3tv3uqgjenr7xrk8cdpd6ttj35dy417#page/82 NOTES: Publication of the catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Certificate of Guarantee and Lawful Origin. Work with gilt frame (Defects) : ". . . Splendid ancient painting, oil on canvas, from the eighteenth century, depicting a clash of cavalry. The painting analyzed here is characterized by the coexistence of Nordic influences and peculiarities characteristic of the Italian school. The particular refinement and chromatic elegance bring the canvas - according to the attribution of a well-known Italian auction house - to the hand of August Querfurt (Wolfenbüttel, 1696 - Vienna, 1761) , an artist of Austrian origin who completed his training in Italy. First pupil of his father Tobias, he defined his training in Augusta under Georg Philipp Rugendas (1666 - 1742) . His canvases for animation, always attentive to reality, and dynamism highlight the inspiration from Jacques Curtois (1621 - 1676) . His artistic growth and maturation led him to a painting of great refinement and formal quality, characterized by a moved but precise brushstroke. In addition to Rugendas and Curtois, echoes of the paintings of Philips Wouwerman (1619 - 1668) , Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632 - 1690) and the Parrocel, Joseph (1646 - 1704) and Charles (1688 - 1752) can be found. In addition, he traveled and completed his training in Italy, feeling above all the influence of some Venetian painters, such as Giuseppe Zais (1709 - 1781) . He specialized in equestrian subjects, especially isolated battles of cavalry or encampments, as he demonstrates the work in question, sometimes even hunting or rural scenes. Set in a particular scenario of a chivalrous clash with the salient and strategically melodramatic aspects of a battlefield. The scene is animated in a single development of the story represents, with a warrior on horseback identifiable as a Turkish due to the coral tunic and a turban, who is alert to a soldier of the opposite sign, conceivable Christian armor. Other steeds follow in various arabesques on the dusty earth, and the continuation of the tumult in the background, with a solution of continuity, under an elegantly leaden sky. Remarkable is his yield in the refinement of the movement, but also the attention to real dynamism. In particular, the glimpse of the sky slightly obscured by vaporous clouds gives a particular movement to the layout of the scene. The work is characterized by particular attention and chromatic elegance, whose soft tones do not deprive the scene of its strength. Regarding its state of conservation, the panel is in fair general condition considering the time of the painting, the pictorial surface is dirty and in patina. We can see - in Wood's light - some scattered restorations and some slight unveiling and oxidation of the painted surface, almost no longer uniform. There are no serious conservative problems and it does not seem to need interventions. In sunlight, a fine crackle is visible compared to the time. The measures of the canvas are cm. 22 x 32. The painting is sold with a gilded frame (frame size, approx. 37 x 47 x 5 cm, presence of defects) . ORIGIN: Coll. private PUBLICATION: Unpublished; MYTHS AND THE TERRITORY in Sicily with a thousand cultures.
