Vienna Picture Bible. Old and New Testaments with the late writings of the Old Testament.
Handcrafted deluxe edition of the Holy Scriptures.
This magnificent Bible presents a never-before-seen selection of 300 book illuminations from the manuscript collection of the Austrian National Library.
The book illuminations come from manuscripts dating from the early 12th century to the 15th century, which are normally kept under lock and key by the Austrian National Library to protect them from decay and damage.
A special merit of the Vienna Picture Bible is that it builds a bridge between old and new, writes Dr. Johanna Rachinger, General Director of the Austrian National Library in her foreword.
It combines the diversity and splendor of art-historically significant miniatures with a current reading of the Holy Scriptures.
For example, the creation of the world (Old Testament, Genesis) is illustrated with a miniature from a Bible moralisée from the early 13th century. It shows God as the creator of the world, who uses a compass to determine the dimensions of heaven, earth, sun, moon and stars.
The motifs “Moses receiving the tablets of the law” and “Adoration of the Golden Calf” are taken from the Admont Giant Bible (12th century) .
The illustrations come from around 20 Bible manuscripts, including the Neapolitan Magnificent Bible of 1360, the Soudenbalch Bible from Utrecht of 1460, the Historical Bible from Urach of 1463 and the legendary Wenzelsbibel of 1389-1399, the first German Bible translation, which was created 140 years before Luther.
The illustrations were then reproduced with great technical effort: thanks to gold printing and patination, they look absolutely true to the original. About a third of the illustrations were even printed with gold foil using a special process and reproduced true to the original.
The 300 fascinating illustrations are accompanied by the ecumenical version “The Good News”, the only interdenominational Bible text.
Each copy of the Vienna Picture Bible is a handmade unique piece, the production of which combines the traditional book design of the Middle Ages and the latest technology.
The cover, for example, is handmade in the tried and tested tradition. It is made of high-quality cowhide and has real gold embossing on the front and spine.
Gold-plated metal corners and a metal clasp, as well as punched gold trim all around, complete the magnificent appearance.
The embossing stamps for the decorative ornamentation were also made by hand according to classic templates.
The enclosed 16-page documentation folder provides more information about the origin of the works of art, provides biblical and art-historical explanations, and illuminates the technical background of their production. It also contains two high-quality original reproductions from the Vienna Picture Bible.
The original price was 2,500. 00 Swiss francs.
The Vienna Picture Bible was published in a strictly limited edition of 1,500 copies. Edition number 856 is for sale.
For all collectors and enthusiasts, it not only satisfies artistic demands but also meets the requirements for a safe and sustainable investment - a family heirloom for generations.
The first edition of this work was presented to Pope Benedict.
Format: approx. 24. 5 x 34. 5 cm. 1072 pages.
The magnificent Bible comes to you protected in a specially made, embroidered textile cover with gold embossing.
