Austria Ferdinand II 1631 Silver Double Taler
AUSTRIA. Ferdinand II, 1619-37.
Silver Double Taler, 1631. Graz.
Obv. Laureate portrait to the right, lion on shoulder, inner circle, date below bust, legend around. Rev. Crowned ornamental arms in flat top shield, chain of the order around. Legend divided.
Struck at Graz, the birthplace and former seat of Ferdinand II, you could say this double taler has a close connection with the Emperor. Before his election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1619, Ferdinand ruled the Inner Austrian territories from Graz, where his court became a centre of the Counter-Reformation. His restoration of Catholic authority there anticipated the religious policies that shaped his imperial reign during the Thirty Years’ War.
Later, Ferdinand retained a lasting attachment to the city. Construction of his mausoleum beside Graz Cathedral began in 1614, and he was eventually buried there following his death in 1637.
Struck from rolled dies, good very fine, light cabinet toning, very rare.
Reference: Herinek-308; Dav-3109
Weight: 57.68g.
Diameter: 49mm.
Composition: Silver.
