Austria Maria Theresa 1780- Silver Taler Bombay Mint 1940-1942 Restrike NGC AU 58

AUSTRIA. Maria Theresa.
Silver Taler, 1780-. Bombay. Restrike.

During the Second World War, Britain required large quantities of these talers to finance military operations and facilitate local trade during the East African Campaign against Italian forces. Consequently, dies were sent to the Bombay Mint in British India, where almost 19 million pieces were struck between 1940 and 1942. Although Austrian in design, the Bombay issue represents a fascinating product of British wartime necessity and the Maria Theresa Taler’s enduring status as an internationally trusted silver currency.
