Austrian Cold-Painted Spelter Reclining Nude Figurine Signed Namgreb

[ translate ]

A late 19th or early 20th-century Austrian cold-painted spelter figurine of a reclining female nude. The figure is depicted in an Orientalist pose, resting on a tiger-skin rug with her left leg raised and her right arm leaning against a dark-coloured bolster cushion. The piece is cast from a dark grey metal alloy and finished with polychrome enamels, including cream-toned skin, black hair, and an orange and black tiger rug. The underside is hollow, revealing the cast metal construction. The reverse bears an impressed square mark containing a stylized B within an urn, alongside a hand-incised signature reading 'Nam Greb'. This signature was a known pseudonym for the Austrian sculptor Franz Xaver Bergmann.

Condition Report:
The figurine exhibits significant age-related wear to the cold-painted finish. There is extensive paint loss, chipping, and flaking across the woman's torso, limbs, and face, exposing the dark base metal beneath (photos 1, 2, and 5). The tiger's head shows rubbing and thinning of the paint on the ears and nose (photo 5). The metal casting remains structurally sound with no visible breaks, cracks, or repairs.
