Beautiful from my private collection this authentic 18th century African Ethiopian leather shield extremely thick skin (elephant skin) . It is decorated with impressions and extreme patination. A beautiful tactile object that is endlessly fascinating. It has received several cuts and repairs, probably in battle. The handle has had several repairs, but is still intact. . Shields were also displayed as emblems of status or rank and also as accessories of the dance during festivals, commemorative ceremonies or after an important victory.
