The Tennyson Birthday Book, featuring signatures by prominent figures. Highlights include: tsarevich Nicholas (future tsar Nicholas II), Prince Esper Esperovich Ukhtomsky, Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Obolensky, Sir Donald Mackenzie Wallace, Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Maharaja of Baroda State, Princess Olga Scherbatoff, Sarah Bernhardt, Baroness Emma Orczy, Sabine Baring-Gould, Lady Hazel Lavery, Winifred Graham, Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie, brown morocco, wear to edges and spine extremities, some age-related yellowing, cracking to front joint, small 8vo, c. 1890s-1900s.

***Provenance: the book originally belonged to Ms Ella Prendergast, daughter of Sir Harry Prendergast. She met many of the signatories at the court of the Gaekwad of Baroda during Tsarevich Nicholas's 1890 Tour of the East.
"The Czarovich had a very large staff, amongst whom was Sir Donald Wallace who had married a Russian lady. The usual round of sight-seeing was done, and visits to and from Gaekwar. A day's shooting was also arranged, which came to rather an abrupt ending, owing to one of the staff mistaking the Czarowitch for a deer behind a clump of long grass. Other visitors at this time were Lord and Lady Jersey, Sir Arthur and Lady Hayter, Sir H. Seymour King", Henry M. Vibart, The Life of General Sir Harry N. D. Prendergast: R. E., V. C., G. C. B., 1914, p. 360.
Prince Ukhtomsky (1861-1921) was a poet and Oriental enthusiast. He was a close confidant of the future tsar Nicholas II.
