Richmond, Sept. 7, [18]61. 4 pages, 4to; moderate creasing along old folds with a few generally small fissures producing negligible losses to contents, some minor smudging. To Gen(eral) H(enry) A(lexander) Wise. Marked "unofficial" but addressing the aftermath of the initial failures of the Confederate military campaign in Western Virginia, including General Wise's conflict with his Confederate co-commander, General John B. Floyd. The further Confederate defeat at Battle of Carnifex Ferry on September 10, 1861 led to the September 25th, 1861 removal of General Wise from his command by Jefferson Davis. Contents and signature strong and clear.
Henry Alexander Wise (1806-1876), U.S. Congressional Representative from Virginia, last antebellum governor of Virginia - signed the death warrant of a John Brown, delegate to Virginia secession convention, Confederate General.
