Richmond, Feb. 11, 1878. 1 1/2 pages, 8vo; moderate creasing along old folds, a few negligible fissures. To Charles Devens, Attorney General of the United States, recommending an application for the office of Marshall of the Eastern District of Virginia. Contents and signature clear and dark. * Lee, Fitzhugh. Manuscript copy, dated Richmond, May 7, 1866, prepared for (General) Henry A(lexander) Wise of General Fitzhugh Lee's official report, dated Richmond, April 22, 1865, to General Robert E. Lee, of the operations of Fitzhugh Lee's command on the retreat from Petersburg, in part commending General Henry A. Wise, "The fast service, of General Henry A. Wise, his antecedents in civil life, and his age, caused his bearing upon this most trying retreat to shine conspicuously fourth..." 2 1/2 pages, 8vo; light to moderate creasing along old folds. 1 page secretarial address to Henry A. Contents clear, with a few manuscript corrections, strong dark signature. Marshall had served as Robert E. Lee's aide de camp, assistant adjutant general and military secretary. * Robertson, (General) B(everly) H(olcombe). Autograph Letter Signed. No place, no date. 1 page, 8vo; light creasing along old folds. To Mrs.(?) Wise. Contents and signature clean and strong, vertical crease through the "R" of Robertson's signature. The recipient or a relation of the recipient has noted in ink at the head of the letter, "Confederate Cavalry General / Beverly H Robertson." New York or no place, all 1890 or no date [but presumed 1890], all 1 or 2 pages, small formats, all on black-edged mourning stationary, 1 in original black-edged mourning cover, all to Mrs. John Sergeant Wise, all clear but starting to fade, also present a well preserved cart-de-visite portrait of Jefferson Davis issued by E. Anthony of New York from a Brady's National Portrait Gallery negative. * Garland, A(ugstus) H(ill). Autograph Letter Signed. Washington, June 4, [18]85. 1 page, 8vo; creased and dampstained - but legible. To John Sergeant Wise on U.S. Department of Justice letterhead. * Grady, Henry W. Typed, dictated, Letter Signed. Atlanta, March 8, 1887. 1 1/2 pages, two 4to sheets; some creasing, some discoloration, and some dampstaining - but entirely legible. To John S. Wise on The Atlanta Constitution newspaper letterhead, "...I received your speech today and read it with great pleasure though of course I cannot agree with its conclusions..." Strong signature affected by creasing but not discoloration or staining. Grady was a white supremacist journalist. * Mason, J(ames) M. Autograph Letter Signed. Winchester, Virginia, Oct. 28, 1855. 4 pages, 4to; creasing along old folds. With later ink annotation at head of the first page. To D. J. Wise. James Murray Mason (1798-1871), grandson of George Mason, U.S. Senator and Congressional Representative from Virginia, drafted the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, Confederate Envoy to Great Britain. * Seddon, James A(lexander). Autograph Letter Signed. Richmond, Va., July 22, 1864. 2 1/4 pages, 12mo; moderate to heavy creasing along old folds, a few fissures at folds, evenly toned. To Brig. Gen. H. A. Wise, responding to Wise's application to offer military commissions to several young men. Signed as Confederate Secretary of War on Confederate States of America War Department letterhead. Contents clear and strong, dark strong signature.
