Avall (European School, 20th Century), Traditional Basque Dancers in Front of the Church of Sitges
This captivating and culturally evocative 20th-century original watercolor painting on paper by European modernist artist Avall beautifully depicts traditional folklore dancers performing in an open plaza. Serving as a companion piece to the artist's coastal scene, this narrative composition centers on a group of young men performing a spirited Basque or Catalan stick/sword dance (Ball de Bastons or Ezpatadantza). Clad in celebratory festival attire consisting of clean white trousers, matching shirts, bold red sashes (gerriko), and dynamic patterned vests, the dancers raise their heavy wooden batons in mid-strike, creating a rhythmic and geometric focal point. In the sun-bleached background stands the recognizable architectural silhouette of the iconic Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla in Sitges, Spain, its towering stone belfry rising against a crisp, light-blue wash sky. Avall expertly utilizes a fluid, minimalist watercolor style, capturing the heat and lively atmosphere of the local festival with rich shadows and high-contrast color placement. The artist's distinctive ink signature "avall" is elegantly fluid-penned in the lower right corner. Frame Size: 13 x 9.5 in.
Condition
The watercolor painting is in excellent structural condition, executed on heavy-weight, high-quality artist's rag paper with pristine, clean margins. The water-based pigments remain beautifully vibrant and true, showing no immediate visual signs of fading, severe foxing, mold, or sun-induced yellowing across the paper base. The reverse side of the paper ground is largely raw and clean, though it exhibits an old strip of brown adhesive tape/mounting residue across the top edge from a previous framing arrangement; this remnants remain strictly isolated to the very top section on the back and do not bleed through or impact the visual integrity of the face composition.
