Avar Kilim
late 19th century, 238 x 157 cm, North East Caucasus, Daghestan
An unusually small kilim from Daghestan. The open blue field comprises four large red palmettes with serrated outlines that could be interpreted as abstract animals. The rare border design includes geometrically abstracted animal-tree figures in the horizontal panels. Finely woven using lazy lines, beautiful colours.
Condition
Some repairs and small holes in the lower third.
